DIPLAHAN, ZSP- A total of 95 Barangay Tanod or barangay police officer in 22 barangays of Diplahan successfully completed the skills enhancement training in two batches from June 6-7, 2023 at Tropical resort, Poblacion, Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay.
These barangay tanods were oriented using the modular approach developed by the National Barangay Operations Office (NBOO) of the DILG which were shared and discussed by the resource speakers from DILG, PNP and MDRRMC.

Vice Mayor Ramil Villaruel in his opening statement emphasized that the Barangay Tanods as force multiplier in peacekeeping efforts in every barangay actually help promote peace and order and public safety thru neighbourhood policing system, likewise need to be proficient and skilled in the performance of their duties.

DILG Officer Lemuel Mejares stressed that the capacity-building and skills training activity designed for barangay tanods is a proficiency- development endeavour to ensure that the participants develop and acquire knowledge and expertise to be able the perform their commitment as barangay volunteers with a high sense of integrity, responsibility and patriotism pursuant to section 388 of RA 7160).

He added that the retooling for barangay tanods aims to: continuously advocate the positive image of barangay volunteer’s contribution to the people’s sense of comfort, security and pride; assist law enforcement agencies in surveillance and intelligence work in the community; act as traffic enforcer; serve as summon officer of the Lupon Tagapamayapa; provide security and protection services to barangay properties and other vital public utilities and installations; impart and equip barangay volunteers a deeper understanding of the structure and organization of the barangay government as it relates to the performance of their duties and functions towards local and national development.

The topics discussed include: Desirable Traits & Ethical Standards of a Barangay Tanod; Courtesy and Discipline in the Performance of Duty; Its Composition and Relation to other Barangay-based institutions discussed by MLGOO Lemuel Mejares; Gender-Sensitive Tanod, Child-friendly tanod; and Culture Sensitive barangay Tanod was discussed also by PCPL EVANESSA L. LIWAGON.

Human-Right Base approach (HRBA in Barangay Peacekeeping; and Crime scene Protection was presented by PMSG GEOVANNIE P. YBAŇEZ while the Crisis Management, incident report writing and Basic Patrol Operations was presented by PSSG MALCOLM D. ANDAYA

PMSG EZEQUIEL C. CABALIDA likewise discussed the Traffic Direction and Control; Arrest, Search and Seizure, and handcuffing technique; while James Gargoles of MDRRM discussed Rescue, and First Aid Techniques as well as Basic Safety Protocols at Different scene, and during calamity.

As workshop outputs, participants conveyed recommended measures to strengthen the operations of barangay tanod including equipment and training, acquisition of protective tools as well as their insurance and other emoluments.#
